FRENCH  COLONIAL  HOUSE  STYLE – 1700-1860 ‘s

French Colonial houses were constructed to adapt to hot, wet, and humid environments. Typically these homes were very popular and were constructed along the Mississippi River Valley. These majestic and beautiful homes were designed with steep gable and/or hip roofs. Welcoming wide porches (often referred to as galleries) accented with narrow columns grace the front and often the side elevations and are sometimes complimented with wrought iron, generally used on balconies or railings. French doors open to wide covered porches and balconies connecting rooms thus allowing for cooling breezes during the warm summer days. Styling of tall and narrow dormers allow for additional light . Interiors generally have no halls but connecting rooms. Paired French doors adorn rooms with transoms overhead allowing for the transfer of light. Double hung windows with multiple glass panes and tall shutters compliment the exterior. The majority of original surviving examples of French Colonial homes today are located in the city of New Orleans.
